Reactionary Managers
In my capacity as an Management Consultant I was amazed at the attitude of senior managers who refused to accept my advice. I had been employed by them to independently analyse their business or parts of it. I worked very conscientiously to find out what the root cause of the problem was and then to use my experience and knowledge to produce an action plan that would retrieve the situation. Having spent a considerable time and lots of their money I then presented them with the facts and the way forward. On many occasions I was surprised at the negative reactions to my proposals. Having now retired I have looked back and my conclusions are that most senior managers are afraid to make any type of decision that might show them in a bad light. They believed that if they were shown to have made wrong decisions this could adveresly affect their careers. My view is that we all make wrong decisions both in work and personal life, we should be prepared to accept this and to use any advice to get ourselves or our business back on track. In the long run we will benefit from advice that helps us to achieve our goals, humility is one thing that we all need to have in order to move on. |
